The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
