Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Trophy in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hardcourt
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his first trophy for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.
The athlete, a ex- world number one, has had a torrid season, achieving just a single victory at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the American major.
Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and struggles with his service game in especial - caused him exiting of the elite rankings and finally separating with long-term mentor his previous coach.
Currently training with Johansson and Goetzke, he has consistently progressed in the past month - culminating in a hard-fought three-set victory over Frenchman Moutet.
This marks his initial trophy following the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface from March of that year.
The win also means Medvedev has achieved twenty-one victories at 21 different events.
"For the first time I'm at a competition with my both daughters together, so to get a trophy is particularly special," commented ranked player the champion.
"This title is in dedication of my younger daughter her name, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter her name was born was for her."
Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his past six championship matches, including in that event previously this season.
Medvedev's defensive strategy and regular outbursts on the tennis court had caused some to question if his ability to perform at the elite level was finished.
Yet the player has altered his approach in the past month, striving to approach the net and perform positively, backed up by an better service.
The champion recovered from a disadvantage in the opening set against the difficult Moutet, taking 4 of the concluding five games to go ahead.
Both players traded service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, striving for his maiden professional championship, seized the initiative to create a final set.
Moutet saved four early chances in a tight final set before Medvedev won the break to that score to secure the win.
Suitably, he earned victory with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
